RELIEF SOCIETY LESSON - "HEAR HIM" BY PRESIDENT NELSON

APRIL 12, 2020
TEACHER - CAROL TURLEY

This week we have a lesson from Carol Turley on "Hear Him" by President Nelson:

My Beloved Sisters:

The Gospel of Jesus Christ has been restored! Our prophet & apostles declared it last Sunday at General Conference. I heard it, the Holy Spirit confirmed it to me, and I knew it was true! I can’t imagine my life without the knowledge that God & Jesus Christ have bodies, that we are God’s children, that there are prophets, seers & revelators who guide us, that we have purpose in being born into mortal bodies, that the Book of Mormon is another testament of Jesus Christ and testifies of our day.

Today, Easter Sunday, I was assigned to guide our Relief Society discussion on a Conference talk from October Conference, then the date was set aside for Stake Conference and now we find ourselves worshipping at home. I would like to share some quotes from the current (April) General Conference, “Hear Him” by President Russell M. Nelson.

“The increasing darkness that accompanies tribulation makes the light of Jesus Christ shine ever brighter. Just think of the good each of us can do during this time of global upheaval.”

And to insert my own observations & feelings. This is an uncertain time – we may be worrying that we might get sick, worrying that our family & friends might get sick or even die from this virus, worrying that we might lose our job or have lost our job, or that our families might lose their job, we might be disappointed that we missed out on a trip, or a wedding or a celebration. For me this has been a time for reflection, and a time to get my “house in order” emotionally, spiritually and physically. President Nelson is right, of course he is right, Jesus Christ is the source to whom we turn to see the light.

“We live in the day that ‘our forefathers have awaited with anxious expectation.’ We have front-row seats to witness live what the prophet Nephi saw only in vision, that ‘the power of the Lamb of God’ would descend ‘upon the covenant people of the Lord, who were scattered upon all the face of the earth; and they were armed with righteousness and with the power of God in great glory.”

If you feel uncertain during this time of quarantine, feel frightened, or just need something to keep your mind busy, this is the perfect time to read the Book of Mormon. The gospel of Jesus Christ is restored. Read for yourself the purpose for which Jesus Christ received a mortal body & came to earth, read for yourself lessons learned by earlier prophets of the blessing received when they were obedient, and read for yourself prophecies for our day.

“We simply cannot rely upon information we bump into on social media. With billions of words online and in a marketing-saturated world constantly infiltrated by noisy, nefarious efforts of the adversary, where can we go to hear Him?”

  1. We hear Him when we go to the scriptures.

  2. We can hear Him when we worship in the temple.

  3. We hear Him more clearly "as we refine our ability to recognize the whisperings of the Holy Ghost."

  4. "We hear Him as we heed the words of prophets, seers, and revelators."

President Nelson has encouraged us to intentionally hear, hearken and heed what the Savior has said. “I promise that you will be blessed with additional power to deal with temptation, struggles, and weakness. I promise miracles in your marriage, family relationships, and daily work. And I promise that your capacity to feel joy will increase even if turbulence increases in your life.”

I felt peace, comfort and great joy as I listened to our prophet guide us at this difficult time. We will return to normalcy, but we mustn’t become complacent and return to our old “normal.” Let each of us commit to following the words of our prophet – hear, hearken and heed to read the scriptures, attend & worship in the temple, refine our ability to receive personal revelation and listen to our prophets, seers & revelators. I miss each of you. I look forward to seeing your faces again. Until then, I send you lots of love.
